Govt responsible for spurt in crime: KMSS

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 13 Voicing grave concern over the growing lawlessness and violence and crime against women in particular the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today held the State Government responsible for the worsening situation, saying that the criminalization of police and politicians was at the root of the situation.

Addressing a press conference, KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi said that the common man had none to approach to redress his grievances, as the police was totally engaged in serving the narrow, selfish interests of the political class. Things have come to such a pass that one needs to bribe the police to get a complaint registered in police station. He said.

Gogoi said that the prevailing chaos and lawlessness had the tacit endorsement of the Congress Government, and that explained why the criminals were able to elude the law consistently.

Quoting from the National Crimes Record Bureau, Gogoi said that violence and crime against women in Assam had witnessed a spurt during the rule of the Congress Government, earning the State the dubious third position in the country.

Questioning how many of the main culprits involved in several recent incidents of crime against women widely covered in the media have been arrested, Gogoi said that the latest incident of molestation of a young girl in full public view in Guwahati testified to sheer police inaction.

Gogoi alleged that the main culprit in the incident, Amarjyoti Kalita, was taking shelter in the house of a surrendered ULFA man but the police did not dare to lay their hands on the criminal.

Gogoi further alleged that a journalist of a Guwahati-based TV channel was involved in the molestation case. He said that the KMSS had visual evidence of the journalists evidence in the crime which it would be submitting to the police today.

Meanwhile, one more person identified as one Hafizuddin of Tarun Nagar has been arrested today in connection with the incident, taking the total number of arrested to four.
