Govt ready to talk

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Dec 14 Assam government today announced that there was scope for negotiation with persons and organisations opposing construction of a mega dam upstream of Brahmaputra river, reports PTI.

The government is prepared to talk to anyone on the issue. We love our state as much as they do, State Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi told reporters here.

Asked to comment on the strong protest by locals and organisations including All Assam Students Union (AASU) against the ongoing construction of a dam by NHPC at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district, he said the government will support construction of dam on scientific basis.

Besides, there are provisions in the National Water Policy and related acts to protect the interests of people living downstream and thus there is need to worry, Bordoloi said.

Local persons have opposed construction of the dam on Subansiri fearing adverse effect downstream of the river.
