Govt plan on city sewerage project

GUWAHATI, March 12 � The Assam Government is negotiating a loan of Rs 1500 crore with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for implementing a comprehensive sewerage project for Guwahati city, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in his budget speech today.

Gogoi said that the State Government has already taken up a Rs 100-crore scheme for the development of drainage system in Noonmati basin to deal with the problem of waterlogging. The State Government has also submitted a scheme to the DoNER for drainage development in Bahini basin, he added.

The execution of the JICA-funded Guwahati drinking water supply project is already in progress and the Government has started the process of preparation of a regional master plan for greater Guwahati area to ensure planned development in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.

To improve the public transport system in the city, the State Government is planning to initiate the exercise of setting up of metro or mono rail and the feasibility study for the same will start in the next financial year, the Chief Minister said.
