GUWAHATI, Dec 11 Alleging that the governments plan to shift the Assam Textile Institute from its present location at Ambari is a ploy to capture more than 16 bighas of land in a prime area of the city, the Assam Textile Institute Suraksha Sammity today said that it would approach the court against the government decision.
Addressing the media here, members of the committee, mainly the alumni and the present students of the institute said that the Assam Textile Institute is the only textile institute in the entire Northeastern region and if it is transferred to a place like the Girls Polytechnique, Bamunimaidam, it would die an unnatural death.
A government order referring to the transfer of the institute mentioned that the Assam Textile Institute would be upgraded to an engineering college. The existing infrastructure at the ATI would be used to convert it into a full-flagged engineering college with regular engineering disciplines. The new engineering college would be under an autonomous society fully funded by the Government of Assam, the order said.
At a time, when other States of the country are setting up new textile institutes, the Government of Assam, on the advice of a vested interest group is withdrawing the resources of the ATI, Azad Ali, general secretary of Assam Textile Institute Suraksha Samity said.
