By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Dec 18 - The functioning of all government establishments in the district was crippled today following mass boycott of all works by government employees including the Sadou Dibrugarh Zilla Karmachari Parishad, Sadou Asom Zilla Prasason Karmachari Sanstha, Municipality employees and mandal bodies among others in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The protesting government employees marched in procession with banners and placards from their respective offices and departments and converged at Chowkidinghee ground to join the gana satyagraha organised by the district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) in protest against CAA. Among the thousands of people, todays gana satyagraha programme was also attended by literary, poet and artist bodies, Lekhika Sanstha, drivers association, Nagarikotto Honkhudon Ain Virodhi Mancha, Sankardev Sangha, clubs, NGOs, medical fraternity and representatives from Nikhil Bharatiya Bongo Sahitya and Centre of Medical Sales Representatives Union and All Assam OBB Teachers Association etc. Members of the Dibrugarh Advocates Association also participated in todays agitational programme.

The mass gathering raised anti-BJP and anti-RSS slogans and cautioned the government against dividing the people on the basis of faith. The gathering also condemned the State BJP government for attempting to subdue the State-wide public protest against the CAA by luring people with job opportunities and promising one-time financial aid to artists.

Dibrugarh AASU leader Rupjyoti Borthakur said that the people will not be influenced by job opportunities or financial grants offered by the BJP-led State government when peoples language, culture, political rights, demography etc., are under threat. Our stand is clear that Assam will not accept illegal migrants irrespective of their faith who entered the State after March 25, 1971. Our fight is not against Hindus, Muslims or any religion, he underlined.

Senior teacher and social activist Haren Chetia while criticising the role of the Sarbananda Sonowal-led State government in imposing CAA said that he is confused as to who is actually the Chief Minister. I am really surprised why Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who also holds the Home portfolio is tightlipped. How come Minister Himanta is speaking on the law-and-order situation and other issues linked to the Home Department. The Chief Minister has really lost the trust of the people who voted him to power. He also criticised the BJP-led government for trying to silence the mass protest by announcing jobs and financial aids.

Dramatist and stage artiste Ashim Sharma, Dr Narayan Upadhyaya, Sadou Dibrugarh Zilla Karmachari Parishad leader Anil Singh and several others spoke during the last day of the three-day State-wide gana satyagraha. Poets staged protest by recitations while artistes expressed their protest against CAA by singing patriotic songs. It needs to be mentioned here that the protest was organised around a black flag at the venue.
