Govt forms probe panel on Dispur violence

GUWAHATI, June 28 � The Government of Assam has constituted a one-man enquiry committee, headed by the Additional Chief Secretary Dr Surajit Mitra, to enquire into the incident that took place at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati on June 22, 2011 during the dharna programme of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) jointly with Brihattar Guwahati Mati Patta Dabi Samiti, said an official press release here today.

The mayhem that took place during the dharna, three persons were killed and a number of persons, including civilians and police personnel, received injuries, besides the damage caused to both private and public properties. The notification, which was issued on June 24, further said that the terms of reference shall be to ascertain facts and circumstances leading to the police action at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati on June 22, 2011 and to determine if there were any lapses on the part of any authority, and if so, on whom to fix responsibility.

The committee has also been asked to suggest measures to be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future and any other matter which is relevant to the incident. The enquiry report is to be submitted within ten days from the date of issue of order.
