Govt forms inspection panel

GUWAHATI, Aug 21 � As directed by the Gauhati High Court, the State Government has constituted the inspection committee to look into various aspects of the August 9 Court order, prohibiting sale of liquor within a 500-metre radius of educational and religious institutions besides Courts and hospitals.

The Government today submitted the names of all the eight members of the committee, which will be headed by PP Verma, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam.

The Court, on August 17, had asked the Government to constitute an inspection committee. The committee will now look into various aspects of liquor sale in the city.

The other members of the committee include Lily Rajbongsi, chairperson, State Anti-drug and Prohibition Council, Assam State Women Commission chairperson or her nominee and Principal Secretary, Government of Assam, Excise department. Representatives of Legal Remembrance Cell, besides Additional Advocate General KN Choudhury and Commissioner of Excise will also be included in the committee.

Meanwhile, the Excise department today also submitted a partial report on the status of the liquor shops in the city. As per the report, 132 liquor shops and bars operating in the Basistha, Beltola and Zoo Road area fall within the radius of 500 metre radius from educational and religious institutions and Courts.

The list of officers who issued licences to the bars and liquor shops operating in Guwahati was also submitted before the Court. The next hearing is dated for August 24.
