Govt failed to act on intel inputs: Cong

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 13 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today alleged that failure the State government to act on information available with police on nefarious designs of insurgent groups to trigger attacks in the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations resulted in the violent incidents at Philobari in Tinsukia and Rongbongbe in Karbi Anglong districts yesterday.

Three persons, including a police personnel, were killed and several others sustained injuries in the two incidents.

APCC president-in-charge Ripun Bora deeply mourned the death of the three innocent persons in the violence and wished quick recovery of those who sustained injuries.

In a statement here, Bora flayed the State government for its lack of initiative to prevent such incidents.

The State government failed to learn lessons from the Kokrajhar carnage, in which several persons lost their lives at the hands of marauding militants sometime back. Instead, the State government is busy issuing one press release after another, he said.

The police limited its activity only to issuing a warning to the people of Philobari about half an hour before the strike by suspected militants yesterday, he said, adding, the government must come out with a statement admitting that the incidents occurred due to the failure to initiate timely action.

Senior police officers should also engage themselves more in providing security to the life and property of the common people, instead of issuing provocative statements, Bora said.

He also condemned the violence perpetrated by militants and demanded immediate halt to such heinous acts.

Meanwhile, the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) also mourned the death of two persons at Philobari.
