GUWAHATI, Dec 22 - Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba today said that the Governments endeavour is to ensure that there is no adverse fallout in the State after the publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) by December 31.
Gauba today chaired the strategic meet of the Unified Command Structure involving the Army, State Police and Central Armed Forces ahead of the publication of the draft NRC.
Speaking to media persons here today, the Union Home Secretary said, It (NRC) is a massive exercise. And as it will be the first draft, people whose names do not appear in the first draft need not get unduly concerned. There will be ample opportunities for subsequent verification, claims and objections.
I have reviewed the NRC update process and found that all the stakeholders are working in tandem, Gauba said, stating that a significant amount of work still needs to be done.
On the Naga framework agreement, the Union Home Secretary said the territorial integrity of all the States would be kept intact.
On the existing law-and-order scenario, he opined that the overall security scenario in the State has improved in the last three years despite the fact that some minor incidents have been reported in between.
Security agencies have been asked to work in concert and step up efforts to effectively deal with the outlawed forces.
Gauba said that fencing along the border has been done on a fast-track mode and steps are being initiated to improve the infrastructure along the State and international border, besides creating more facilitation centres to boost trade in the border areas.
There is also a proposal to develop a stretch of 264 kilometres of road from the Assam-West Bengal border to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The proposal will be taken up with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The Union Home Secretary also met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal earlier today.
