Govt claims over tea tribe uplift misleading

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has accused the State government of adopting double standards with regard to uplift of the tea community.

In a statement, Saikia said that while the government, on one hand, is announcing one scheme after another with much fanfare, its Parliamentary Affairs Minister, on the other, stated in the floor of the Assembly that the government is unable to provide the interim daily wage of Rs 167 and ration and healthcare to the workers of the 15 estates under the Assam Tea Corporation Ltd.

He said that the State government is making misleading claims regarding various issues, like release of funds for development of the tea garden workers.

Saikia said that some schemes have been announced by the government only keeping in view the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and added that it has no intention to solve the actual problems being faced by the tea sector and the tea community.
