Govt apathy for preservation of historic tank in Darrang resented

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, Nov 19 - The Directorate of Archaeology under the State Cultural Affairs Department is observing World Heritage Week along with the rest of the world. Theme for this years observance is Our heritage, our pride, let us preserve it. However, at a time when the State government is emphasising preservation of heritage and historical sites, its apathy towards scientific preservation of the historic Raja Pukhuri tank at Raja Pukhuri Bagisa of Raja Pukhuri panchayat under the Dalgaon revenue circle has been resented by conscious circles and Nature lovers here. Fresh demands for its necessary protection and preservation have been raised before the competent authorities, including State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

A delegation of the panchayat recently submitted a memorandum to Dr Sarma during an election rally at Kalaigaon. After going through it, the Minister asked Mangaldai Lok Sabha MP Dilip Kumar Saikia to do the needful. Earlier, we had also moved Revenue Minister J Mohan and Darrang DC D Borah in this regard, said Saiful Islam, a Nature lover from Raja Pukhuri Panchayat, while talking to this correspondent. Meanwhile, Dr Nagendra Nath Sharma, author, research scholar and president of the All Assam Ex-MLA Association, also expressed grave concern over the threat to the historical site from antisocial elements, which he said is due to the indifferent attitude of the authorities towards protection and preservation of the historic tank.

As per records available, in response to an Assembly question by Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das, the Darrang district administration by a letter with memo no.DRS 13/2018/35-A dtd Feb 16, 2019, informed that the tank, covering a total area of 137 bigha and 10 lessa, was encroached by one Humayun Kabir and 24 others. Earlier, after a site visit by a team from the State archaeology directorate, the Director of Archeology, in a letter (memo no.ARCH/261/Darrang/2017-18/399-A dtd August 3, 2017) requested Darrang DC to hand over the physical possession of the site for its protection under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act-2010, the Assam Monuments and Records Act-1959 and the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Rule-1964.

The tank has been included in the list of 16 potential sites for development under the Asom Darshan Achoni.
