GUWAHATI, Jan 7 Governor PB Acharya has expressed his deep concern, hurt and pain at the frequent and merciless killing of the one-horned rhinoceros the symbol of Assam by enemies of the State.

The Governor directed the government officials concerned to take urgent preventive action and pinpoint responsibility on all concerned. He also instructed them to identify the persons accountable for such heinous national crimes and to punish them severely according to the law.

In a statement, Acharya said that despite sufficient security arrangements at the Kaziranga National Park, it is shocking that such condemnable incidents were taking place on a regular basis. This, he added, puts a question mark on the integrity and efficiency of the protectors of the States

forests and wildlife.

The Governor further urged Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain to do justice to his Ministry and discharge his responsibilities to the State and its people and resources carefully, sincerely and judiciously.

The Governor also gave instructions to change the whole set-up of security personnel without any delay, if required.

We are accountable to the people of Assam and the nation. Our inefficiency may result in an ecological void which may never ever be filled again, he said.

He also appealed to all animal lovers, eco-conservationists and related organisations as well as the general public to be on the alert and to nip in the bud all conspiracies of such criminals.
