Governor visits cleft care centre

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 � Governor of Assam JB Patnaik visited the Operation Smile Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in Guwahati here today.

The Governor was given a tour of the state-of-the-art cleft care facility by the Centre Director Mahesh Kumar Deori and the Medical Director Dr Mark Schoeman.

There was a brief presentation made to the Governor that encapsulated the key features of the facility and how Operation Smile work in Assam in collaboration with the State Government has emerged as a global role model.

The Operation Smile, Comprehensive Cleft Centre situated in MMC Hospital in Panbazar, Guwahati is an outcome of the unique Public-Private Partnership between Operation Smile and the Government of Assam and supported by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts.

More than 7,400 safe surgeries have been conducted by Operation Smile in Assam.

The Governor also met and interacted with the doctors, surgeons, staff and volunteers including those from abroad. He also met Ranjit Barthakur, the chairman of the Board, who gave him a detailed description of the scheme of operation and management and introduced him to all those involved in the project.

The Governor expressed his deep satisfaction at the functioning of the centre. He also laid emphasis on the fact that it would be better if the occurrence of cleft could be completely eradicated.
