Governor takes part in cleanliness drive

NALBARI, Oct 19 - The Governor of Assam, Banwarilal Purohit took part in a cleanliness drive under Swachh Bharat Abhijan at Nalbari Harimandir premises on Tuesday morning. The Governor had arrived in the district on Monday afternoon and taken stock of the development activities in the district. On Tuesday morning, he formally inaugurated a cleanliness drive where he himself took part.

Addressing the inaugural meeting, the Governor said the culturally rich people of the State should lead the cleanliness movement. He added that as Assam is culturally very rich, it should set an example in cleanliness in the country.

Purohit who arrived at the Nalbari circuit house on Monday afternoon on a two-day visit called upon the concerned officials to give more emphasis on the education of girls in consonance with the Government�s Beti Bachao drive.

Addressing a meeting of the heads of all developmental departments, the Governor said that to educate the society, we must educate the women first. He directed the Deputy Commissioner to complete the residential school of Mukalmua area which has the provision to accommodate a hundred girls. He further demanded of the district head to strictly monitor the student-teacher ratio in the primary and upper primary schools.

Expressing his concern over the degradation of the environment, the Governor urged the Deputy Commissioner to assign responsibility to the panchayat to look after the trees that were planted on the World Environment Day. It will ensure the growth of plants in the concerned panchayat.

Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani welcomed the Governor with a phulam gamosa. The Governor also discussed various developmental issues of the district with leading citizens and the representatives of some leading NGOs.
