Gorkhas threaten agitation over exclusion from NRC

By CORRESPONDENT

UDALGURI, Aug 26 - The All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) has threatened to launch a democratic and legal course of action after the names of many people from the community did not figure in the recently published complete draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Everybody, even the Union government, knows that we, the Gorkhas, belong to India and we have enormous contributions and sacrifices for the freedom of our motherland. But unfortunately, many of our people have not been figured in the recently published complete draft of NRC, Birendra Kumar Subba, chief adviser of AAGSU, said while addressing a mammoth rally at Gorkha Rangasala, Khowrang, in Udalguri yesterday.

If the NRC authority does not include all the names of the Gorkha people in the NRC final copy, we shall have no other option but to go for a democratic and legal course of action to justify our originality in this land, he said.

Subba recalled the valuable contribution of Gorkha soldiers under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the Indian National Army for the cause of freedom of India, in which Major Durga Malla was caught by the British forces and hanged in Delhi on August 25, 1944.

But sorry to say, freedom fighters from our community are now ignored and many of the people having served in the Indian Army have not been included in NRC complete draft, he said.

The 74th Balidan Divas in the memory of Major Durga Malla was held here at Khowrang on August 24-25 along with the 18th biennial conference of the Khowrang Anchalik Committee of AAGSU. The sessions were attended by Capt Bishal Thapa of 14 Garhwal Rifles, Ripen Daimari, MCLA of Bhairabkunda BTC constituency, Rohit Kumar Dahal, general secretary of BTC AAGSU, Ramesh Dahal, president of the Udalguri district committee of Assam Gorkha Sammelan among many others. The meeting also felicitated HSLC and HS candidates who brought glory to the region with their brilliant results.
