Gorkha Sanmelan on verge of split

BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 9 � A section of senior Nepali citizens have expressed grave concern over some activities that have been going on in the premier organisation of the Nepali community living in Assam � the Asom Gorkha Sanmelan � led by former MP Mani Kumar Subba.

They also resented that no discussion took place on the problems being faced by the community, in the recent triennial conference held at Galin, Biswanath Chariali.

Protesting the activities of some of the office-bearers of Asom Gorkha Sanmelan, a public meeting was held recently at Gorkha High School, Guwahati, with eminent Nepali litterateur Lee] Bahadur Chetri in the chair. Hundreds of people from different parts of the State, including former president of Asom Gorkha Sanmelan, Padam Bahadur Chetri, vice-president Phanindra Sharma, noted lawyer Ram Prasad Sharma, Swarup Upadhyaya, Puspajang Chetri, Karna Chetri, Dilu Sharma, Arun Bhattarai, Em Prasad Acharya, etc, attended the meeting.

The meeting decided to hold a conference of Nepali people this month and a convenor committee was formed in this regard with Leel Bahadur Chetri, Dal Bahadur Chetri, Padam Bahadur Chouhan. Swarup Upadhyaya and Ram Prasad Sharma as advisors, Kashinath Upadhyay as chief convenor, Phanindra Sharma, Puspa Janga Chetri, Udai Chetri, Sanman Chetri, Mahendra Burhathoki, Prakash Rimal, Chandra Sharma and Gunn Bahadur Thapa as convenors. The meeting also decided to constitute a new organisation, namely All Assam Gorkha Sanmelan�. The convenor committee has sought help and cooperation from all members of the Nepali community to make the upcoming conference a success.
