Golondi in spate, 5 villages inundated

UDALGURI, Aug 20 - Due to heavy downpour during last night along neighbouring Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh, Golondi, a tributary of Jiya Dhansiri river has created havoc in the lowlands of Udalguri district and inundated Botabari, Kahibari, Puroni Thana, Kathalguri and Dangdupur villages.

All the abovementioned areas fall under Udalguri Revenue Circle. Standing crops of the farmers were totally damaged.

According to reports available, strong currents of the Golondi river swept away one Anandi Chouhan (50), village woman of Puroni Udalguri and her whereabouts is yet to be ascertained by the Disaster Management Department under the district administration till the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, villagers of Kathalguri area under Udalguri Police Station have alleged that the embankment which was constructed some four months ago along the Golondi river was defective and was easily breached by the strong currents of the river, following which most parts of the village was inundated by flood waters and considerable property damaged.
