Golden jubilee of Nagaland Assembly

DIMAPUR, Nov 29 � Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today urged the Nagaland Assembly and people of the State to lay stress on girls� education and women representation in the State Assembly. She also urged the people to develop the State according to its special and unique position in the socio-cultural landscape of the country.

Inaugurating the 50th anniversary celebration of Nagaland Assembly at the Assembly complex in Kohima on Saturday as the chief guest, Mahajan asked the State to develop itself in accordance with its culture and potential and not copy other States.

Explaining that skills, forests and culture of the people should be considered in urbanisation of the State, she stressed on the tourism potential in Nagaland which can give numerous employment opportunities to the Nagas.

�When the idea of development is considered, we should think about youngsters and emphasise on skill development,� the Speaker said while adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been paying special attention to skill development.

Lauding the democratic system prevalent in Nagaland, especially local self-government where heads of the villages are highly respected and collective working is prevalent, she said it is the responsibility of the elected members to ensure that governance in the State remains accountable, transparent and responsive to the people�s needs and demands.

She also unveiled the 50 years commemorative monolith and released the 50 years commemorative souvenir of Nagaland Assembly.

Later, addressing a press conference, Mahajan said women should also enjoy their rights in policy making and decision making.

Nagaland Governor PB Acharya said the Nagaland Assembly has functioned based on the true spirit of democratic principles and followed the noble ideals enshrined in the Constitution of India during the last 50 years.

Chief Minister TR Zeliang, Assembly Speaker Chotis�h Sazo and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio also spoke on the occasion.
