Golden jubilee of bar council of NE States

GUWAHATI, Dec 8 � The Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is going to hold its golden jubilee celebrations here on December 10 and 11.

Devananda Konwar, Governor of Bihar, will inaugurate the programme to be held at Rabindra Bhawan here on December 10.

Justice Jasti Chelameswar, judge of Supreme Court of India, will release the souvenir and deliver his speech as the guest of honour. Chief Justice (acting) of Gauhati High Court Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal, State Minister of Health and Education Himanta Biswa Sarma, Asok Kumar Deb, managing trustee of Bar Council of India and OM Maheshree, member of Bar Council of Assam, will also speak on the occasion, a statement said.

The Bar Council of Assam Nagaland, etc., is also organising two seminars on the topics, �Role of bar council in legal profession with the advent of globalisation� and �Electoral reforms� on both days.

Dr NR Madhava Menon, founder director, NLS, Bangalore, who currently holds the Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair on Parliamentary Studies, Rajya Sabha and Dr Gurjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, National Law School and Judicial Academy of Assam, will be the distinguished speakers in the first seminar.

Former Chief Election Commissioner of India Naveen Chawla, Bijan Chandra Das, senior advocate and member, Bar Council of Assam Nagaland, etc., and Nilayananda Dutta, senior advocate and former chairman of Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, etc., will speak on electoral reforms on Sunday, the statement added.

The valedictory function of the golden jubilee celebration, to be held on Sunday, will be attended by Governor of Assam JB Patnaik and Union Law Minister Salman Khursid.

Ex-chairmen and vice-chairmen of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, etc., will also be felicitated on the occasion.
