DIGBOI, May 5 The golden jubilee celebration of the Digboi chapter of Shri Aurobindo Society got under way in a solemn atmosphere on the evening of May 2 last in the auditorium of India Club. The programme began with paying of tributes to Shri Aurobindo and the Mother, lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Gopal Bhattacharjee, International secretary of Shri Aurobindo Society in Pondichery, Subrato Ghosh, executive director of IOCL (AOD) and Dr NK Bhattacharjee, chairman of the Digboi chapter of Shri Aurobindo Society and a lyrical invocation presented by a gifted band of local artistes. Then there followed a brief spell of quiet meditation by all those present in the auditorium.

The meeting on the occasion was presided by Gopal Bhattacharjee. Subrato Ghosh was the chief guest. Dr NK Bhattacharjee, while welcoming the assembly of men and women attending the historic occasion, said that the Digboi Chapter of Shri Aurobindo Society was the oldest in the world, having been established in 1960 and consecrated by the Mother herself. He paid his glowing tributes to Gopal Bhattacharjee who had begun his spiritual journey in 1956 from Digboi well before the setting up of the society itself and all the former office bearers, associates and members for their rich contributions, services and support to the branch.

He thanked Subrato Ghosh for all his assistances and help for proper up-keep of the Mothers temple and the branch as a whole. Referring to the unageing ideas and preachings of Shri Aurobindo and their present day relevance, Dr Bhattacharjee, himself a renowned cardiologist called upon the gathering to arise and awake to their consciousness and transcend their limitations.

In his inspiring speech, the chief guest Subrato Ghosh paid compliments to Gopal Bhattacharjee for sowing the seed of this glorious organisation at Digboi in the remote corner of the country way back in 1958. He said that in the prevailing chaos and crises of life Shri Aurobindo was one of the few great souls to dispense light and hope to the derelict masses of humanity. He urged the Digboi Chapter to initiate social programme for the uplift of the common masses.

Gopal Bhattacharjee in his highly illuminating presidential speech referred to the multifarious activities of Shri Aurobindo and established the running thread of unity among them all. He hailed Shri Aurobindo as a great scientist who sought to overcome the narrow limitations of being in the light of Super Mind and Truth and could thereby advocate and Action straight from the Supreme. His concepts of Super Mind and Truth were a great contribution to philosophy.

The meeting was followed by a medley of interesting cultural programmes.
