Gold worth Rs 6 cr seized

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 - In a major seizure, Government Railway Police today recovered 19 kg of gold from four persons, including three women, at the Guwahati Railway Station.

The seized gold is worth around Rs 6 crore.

The four accused were about to board the Dn Saraighat Express when they were caught by GRP men during routine checking. They have been identified as Laltandika (29), Lalhmlngmawii (42), Lalnghinglovi (34) and Sailahmuni (40), GRP OC Utpal Das said.

GRP Superintendent of Police Pradeep Pujari said the four accused are couriers.

They hail from Mizoram. They got the gold from a person at Aizawl and they were tasked to deliver them at Howrah. They were asked to make a call before reaching the destination and they would be told where to deliver it, Pujari said.

The gold has been reportedly sourced from Myanmar. There has been a spurt in smuggling of gold, reportedly prompted by its demand in the post-demonetisation phase. Myanmar has replaced the traditional smuggling routes like Dubai, Bangkok and Bangladesh.

The GRP here alone has seized over 80 kg of gold this year alone, most of them sourced from Myanmar.

The gold brought via the Dubai route has 22-carat purity, the metal that is smuggled through the Myanmar route is of 24-carat purity. The price of the yellow metal is much less in Myanmar and its duty is also high in India.

Sources also said that following demonetisation, people invested their black money in Myanmar and that is now being brought back in the form of gold.
