Gold bars seized in Aizawl

AIZAWL, Aug 23 - Customs officials recovered 114 bars of smuggled gold at Melthum, about three miles south of Aizawl, on Wednesday and arrested three persons, including two Myanmarese nationals.

The seized gold weighed 18967.46 grams and were valued at Rs 585,16,614 in the international market.

The arrested persons have been identified as Laliapa (39), Biakliana (40) � both residents of Falam district, Chin state of Myanmar � and R Lalhmingmawia (40), a resident of Chanmari West Aizawl. They have been booked under the Customs Act, 1962.

With the current seizure, gold bars worth over Rs 38.13 crore have been seized in Aizawl in this year alone � the largest such haul in recent times.
