Golaghat cops renovate Kushal Konwars lockup

By SANJOY KR. HAZARIKA

DERGAON, Aug 20 - The Golaghat police personnel have executed the project to renovate and preserve the lockup which was used by the British to imprison freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

Kushal Konwar, who was the only martyr from the State to be hanged by the British during 1942s Quit India Movement, had to spend several days in the lockup before his execution.

The new SP Golaghat Pushpraj Singh while visiting the Golaghat police station in January this year after taking charge came to know of the historic lockup at the station. Then he asked his subordinates to arrange for its renovation and preservation, the cost of which should be borne by the police personnel themselves.

Finally, the renovated lockup was inaugurated by the DC Dhiren Hazarika on the 73rd Independence Day. Inaugurating the same, the DC declared the lockup open for the public.

After visiting our police station, the Superintendent of Police was excited to know about the existence of the historic lockup in our station. He asked us to initiate a project to renovate and preserve the lockup. And finally, we have completed his dream with the help of the police personnel of our station along with our superiors, Dipak Bora, the OC Golaghat police station said.

We are also planning to set up a statue of Kushal Konwar in the station premises, the OC said.

It may be mentioned that a major train accident occurred on October 10, 1942 where a train carrying British soldiers was derailed and many soldiers were killed at a distance of 1 km from Sarupathar railway station.

As Konwar was a prominent Congress leader in the district, he was arrested by the British on November 5, 1942 and accused as the chief brain behind the train accident. Finally, he was sentenced to death by hanging.

After his arrest, he was kept in the lockup for some days.

The initiative of the SP and the cooperation by the cops to renovate the historic property has been praised by all in the district.
