Gogoi unhappy with Guwahati molestation case verdict

Guwahati, Dec 11 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday expressed his unhappiness over the court verdict in the July 9 molestation case, and warned those who had investigated the case of action if any lapse was found.

"I am not happy over the judgment," said Gogoi, referring to the acquittal of local television channel journalist Gourav Jyoti Neog, who was among the 16 accused.

Addressing a press conference after the first day of the Assembly's Winter Session, Gogoi said that he would take action against the investigating officer (IO) if there was any lapse during the investigation.

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup, had recently convicted 11 accused but acquitted four others, including Neog, giving them the "benefit of doubt".

The judgment said: "It is not understood why the investigating team got the controlled voice sample of Neog recorded by a studio photographer. The investigating team could have easily collected his voice sample with the help of experts of the CID or with the assistance of forensic experts."

"In the present era, voice matching is a very common practice and done easily, if the sample is collected with precision. Thus, by such an act of non-professional approach and lack of precision, the investigating team has allowed to waste vital evidence..."
