Gogoi slams BJP over flood relief

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 30 In a hard-hitting statement here, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for their alleged bids to mislead the people on the issue of utilisation of the Central Fund for disaster relief.

Gogoi alleged that the BJP is trying to divert peoples attention from the disquieting fact that there has been no Central package or assistance announced for Assam so far despite the unprecedented calamity caused by the recent floods.

The Chief Minister, who was reacting to the criticism of the BJP leaders on the issue, categorically pointed out that the State has fully utilised the Central fund for disaster relief. While the State had utilised the Central allocation for disaster relief last fiscal, the Centre is yet to release its share this year. On its part, the State has already released the share for 2014-15, he added.

The Prime Minister not only visited Jammu & Kashmir but announced a special package for the flood-hit State immediately. In the case of Goalpara which faced unprecedented catastrophe like that of Jammu & Kashmir, the Prime Minister did not find time to visit the State nor did he announce any special package. Much before the latest deluge, the State has had experienced two waves of floods resulting in huge losses of lives and property. Why is this discrimination being meted out to the people of Assam?, the Chief Minister questioned.
