Gogoi seeks investments from Singapore

GUWAHATI, Nov 22� Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today extended invitation to the investors of Singapore to invest in Assam, saying Assam now offers attractive opportunities for investment. The Chief Minister was delivering the keynote address at the Second South Asian Diaspora Convention organised by the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University of Singapore.

An official press release said here this evening that showcasing the State�s potential in key sectors, the Chief Minister said emerging from a period of unrest and low growth during the 1990s, Assam has been growing at a steady pace of 6-7.5 per cent over the past several years. In fact, the last 10 years have been an era of progress in social and economic sectors, with marked improvement on various indicators.

While much remains to be done, Assam has successfully implemented a wide range of programmes for human development and economic progress, he said.

Dwelling at length on the tea industry in the State, he said Assam is not only the largest tea producing State in India, but it is also one of the largest tea producing regions in the world.

The Assam government is developing a Tea Park near Guwahati to provide warehousing and other export related services. Now, in addition to creation of value addition through a large range of tea-based drinks, there is a growing attraction for �Tea Tourism� in Assam, he said.

While tea production continues to thrive in Assam, the State�s economy has however moved on to new frontiers, he said.

The State government, with strong support from the Central government, has invested heavily in health and education infrastructure. A number of new medical colleges have been set up. In education sector also, Assam has allowed setting up of private universities and educational institutions.
