Gogoi loyalists to step up pressure in Delhi

By SPl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 2 Politicking within the Assam Congress has yet again picked up pace, with a group of Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi loyalist arriving in the national capital, amidst reports of a shake up in the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC).

On Tuesday, State Industries Minister, Pradyut Bordoloi met Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, while several senior loyalists including Nilomoni Sen Deka, Bharat Narah and Gautam Roy have started arriving. A group of over 21 MLAs including ministers owing allegiance to Tarun Gogoi had announced their decision to petition the Congress president.

The group has called for discipline in the party and a reshuffle of Tarun Gogoi Ministry, targeting those opposed to the Chief Minister. It was, however, not clear whether the memorandum was submitted today. But Bordoloi told waiting newsmen that the Congress president has asked them to work for 2014 elections.

The visit by the group comes in response to a visit by the disgruntled MLAs, who are calling for a change of leadership.

Meanwhile, PCC president, Bhubaneswar Kalita today dismissed reports of a change of guard. He said he has come to Delhi to take part in the meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Home Ministry and not summoned by the AICC.

I have not heard anything specific about change of PCC president. On the other hand, we have done well in Panchayat polls and now Guwahati Municipal elections. So, where then is the reason for a change now, he asked, pointing out that such speculations have been going on for a while.
