Gogoi for panel to study Bhutan dam impact

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 19 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today vouched for constitution of an expert committee to study the downstream impact of the Bhutan-based hydro- electric project on the State.

Gogoi said that all kinds of apprehensions concerning its ill-effects on Assam must be allayed before going ahead with the project. Talking to newsmen here this afternoon, the Chief Minister also stated that aspects like flood mitigation and other issues must be thoroughly examined and even the State Government should be made a party to it.

We should be taken into confidence before going ahead with the project as was done by the previous Government while effecting the land swap deal with Bangladesh, Gogoi said, adding, Assam should also get a share from the project. Such should be the methodology that both countries get benefitted from the project.
