Gogoi directive to partymen

GUWAHATI, March 8 � In a significant development, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), today directed party chief whip Nilamani Sen Deka to inform all the party members not to indulge in any signature campaign and also to refrain from making any statement to the media.

CLP, sending in a strong message that it is not going to tolerate any dissident activity, today terminated the associated membership of Javed Islam who represents Mankachar LAC in the State Assembly, for his alleged involvement in dissident activities.

Meanwhile, several of the dissident MLAs are contacting the Chief Minister loyalists stating that they are willing to stand by the Chief Minister in case there is any need to hold an open demonstration of number strength. These legislators include some of the Parliamentary Secretaries, who were in the dissident camp till yesterday, confided those loyal to the Chief Minister.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita, however, denied any dissident activity in the CLP. He was contacted by this newspaper to know his reaction on the developments taking place within the CLP during the past couple of days.

Kalita said, �We are sorting out whatever difference is there within the party (CLP). We are expecting a solution shortly.� However, the APCC chief refused to divulge anything when asked to explain the differences that are troubling the CLP presently, saying, �These are internal matters of the party.�

Significantly, contrary to the instruction of the Chief Minister, party sources informed this newspaper that till this evening 58 signature have been obtained in support of Tarun Gogoi as the CLP Leader.

The signature campaign launched yesterday in support of Gogoi�s leadership will continue for sometime, as, many of the party legislators are now expressing their willingness to display their support to him.
