Gogoi confident of romping home in polls

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Feb 3 Asserting that the Congress would register an emphatic win in the ongoing Panchayat polls, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the party was gaining more and more mass support in view of its good work on the rural development front.

Our thrust has all along been on expediting rural development, and at the same time we are committed to ensuring decentralization of powers at the grassroots. We are confident of recording a hattrick in the panchayat polls, Gogoi said at a press conference at the Rajiv Bhawan.

Taking a dig at the opposition parties, Gogoi said that they were increasingly losing ground which was evident from the fact that none of the parties barring Congress were able to field candidates for all the Panchayat posts at various levels.

We have fielded over 26,000 candidates, and this testifies to our growing position at the grassroots. The AGP, BJP and AIUDF have not been able to field enough number of candidates, he added.

Claiming that the States rural areas witnessed progress in health-care, education, housing, etc., Gogoi said that the AGP had received Rs 1.400 crore for rural development during its tenure but that was never visible at the ground level.

We have done good work even though we still have miles to goareas such as health-care, housing, education, etc., have improved a lot. In self-employment also, we have facilitated growth of self entrepreneurship.

Today we have 2.71 lakh self-help groups (SHGs) compared to 11,786 when we assumed charge 12 years back, Gogoi said.
