Gogoi challenges BJP to prove charges

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 6 - Accusing the BJP of spreading malicious rumours during the Assembly poll campaign, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to prove that the Congress regime in Dispur has patronised and sheltered illegal immigrants.

Addressing a party rally at the Assam Engineering Institute ground here at Chandmari, Gogoi said that the BJP has been engaged in spreading a lot of falsehood.

I challenge the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to prove that I have given shelter to illegal immigrants. If they can prove it I will quit politics, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, APCC chief Anjan Dutta exuded confidence of the Congress securing a majority in the Assembly polls.

He said the party will get 42-45 of the seats that went to the polls in the first phase on April 4 and another 30 seats which are slated to go to the polls on April 11.

Dutta also alleged that the BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are using the illegal migrant issue only as a mere poll plank.

If they are so serious about the issue, what steps had they taken to address the issue? The AGP was at helm of affairs at Dispur twice. What had they done? Dutta questioned.
