GUWAHATI, April 20 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed all the departments concerned of the State government to initiate all required steps for meeting the challenges to be posed by natural calamities in the near future.
According to an official press release here, presiding over a meeting on disaster management in his conference room in the State Secretariat, the Chief Minister asked the departments concerned to get themselves prepared urgently for rescue and relief operations, to store the essential drugs and baby food and other materials required to provide immediate relief to flood victims.
He directed the senior officers concerned to initiate steps for checking erosion, keeping the transportation system intact, besides preparing the district administrations for meeting the situations resulting from natural calamities.
Gogoi instructed the officers to keep the water carrying capacities of the Guwahati drains intact so as to prevent flash floods. Moreover, he said there should be steps also to identify the landslide-prone areas of the city and to prevent landslide-related tragedies.
The Chief Minister also asked the officers to make the school students aware of the safety measures for preventing earthquake-related tragedies and also to take care of the security-related aspects connected with earthquakes.
The Chief Minister further directed the officers to undertake a survey for assessing the earthquake-resistant capacities of the Guwahati buildings and to ensure the safety of their dwellers.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia and senior officers of the health department, public works department (PWD), Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, City Police and the Kamrup (Metro) district.
