NEW DELHI, Oct 18 Two days after meeting Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi called on Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh on Monday and briefed him about hosts of issues including the mega dam and ULFA peace process.

The Chief Minister began his day by meeting Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma and demanded revival of the defunct Ashok Paper Mill. Revival of the Mill is part of the Assam Accord.

Gogoi during his meeting pressed for revival of the Mill if need be in public-private partnership mode.

After his meeting with Anand Sharma, he met the Prime Minister. Gogoi is scheduled to call on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Kamal Nath, later in the evening.

On Saturday, the Chief Minister had called on Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. This is his first meeting with Gandhi after his heart surgery. Gogoi is reported to have briefed her about the prevailing political situation in Assam and reported snapping of ties between AGP and BJP, besides the bid by AGP to unite smaller regional parties.

The meeting was significant because of the intense lobbying for the post of PCC chief. Gogoi reportedly gave his opinion on the issue. While Gogois camp is pitching for election of Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita is aspiring for another term.

Last week, the Chief Minister had told this newspaper that he proposed to suggest to the Prime Minister on constitution of an expert committee to study the issue of mega dams in upper reaches of Brahmaputra and its impact downstream. He said though he is not against construction of dams, the issues raised should be addressed.
