Goalpara down Lakhimpur for title

GUWAHATI, May 22 � With a hard-fought eight-run victory against Lakhimpur in the final, Goalpara annexed the title in the maiden edition of the Assam Cricket Association organised U-14 All Assam Inter Coaching Centre/Academy Cricket Championship.

At ACA�s Barsapara stadium here today, Goalpara boys managed to score 133 for nine in the stipulated 35 overs.

But due to heavy rain, the Lakhimpur innings was reduce to 15 overs with a revised target of 58 runs. The Lakhimpur boys could score only 49 for eight in their quota.

At one stage, Goalpara were tottering at 51 for five but a 41-run partnership between Sambhab Jain and Akash Sengupta for the sixth wicket 47-run for the seventh wicket between Akash Sengupta and Tonmoy Kakati lifted them to a fighting total.

Akash Sengupta and Gaurab Chakraborty, both Goalpara, were adjudged as man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series respectively. The winning team was awarded Rs 10,000 and the runners-up team walked away with Rs 5,000 respectively along with trophies.

In the closing function, ACA treasurer Ghanashyam Baruah and vice-president Gafur Zaman gave away the champion and runners-up trophies respectively.

Brief scores: Goalpara 133/9 in 35 overs (Akash Sengupta 46 n.o, Tonmoy Kalita 26, Sambhab Jain 23, Aminoor Ali 3/34). Lakhimpur 49/8 in 15 overs (Angajyoti Gogoi 19, Inamul Haque 2/4).
