Goa Dy CM to campaign for BJP in Manipur

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, March 12 Goas Deputy Chief Minister Francis D Souza will join the election campaign for the BJP candidates in Manipur tomorrow.

The reason behind the Goa Deputy Chief Ministers visit to the State for the election campaign is to show that BJP is not against Christianity, according to BJP Manipur unit president Th Chaoba.

During his stay, the visiting Goan leader will join the partys election campaign at Noney in Tamenglong, Ukhrul and Churachandpur district headquarters for BJP candidate Prof Gangmumei Kamei who is contesting the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency (hill districts).

The constituency is dominated by Christian voters and the presence of Goan Deputy Chief Minister Francis D Souza, who is a Christian, in the election meetings at Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Ukhrul districts is considered significant with the party hoping to erase the perception that BJP is anti-Christian.

Professor RK Ranjan is contesting on BJP ticket in the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency (Valley districts).

Speaking to the media, State BJP leader and former Union Sports Minister Th Chaoba said that D Souza will be attending the election meeting in Ukhrul and Churachandpur during his three-day visit to the State.

He said that the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the issue of border fencing along the Manipur-Myanmar sector will be the key poll planks of the party.

Earlier, Chaoba welcomed former State Tourism Minister and advisor of NPF Dr Khashim Ruivah, Dongkhamang Haokip, N Ratan alias Kapu Meitei, Ch Joykumar Singh and former Director of State Health Services Dr Mangsatabam Birachandra Singh to the party fold.

Meanwhile, a meeting of public leaders, social workers, intellectuals, representatives from all communities and well-wishers in Tamenglong District on Monday decided to support and work for BJP candidate Prof Gangmumei Kamei.
