GNLA ultras guns down woman in Garo Hills

By Correspondent

BAGHMARA, June 4 The violence-hit Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was rocked today following the killing of a 35-year-old mother of four near Chokpot area at around 6 pm yesterday.

The militants, suspected to be GNLA cadres, pumped 5-6 rounds of bullets into her head, killing her on the spot, said Lakador Syiem, SP of South Garo Hills.

The incident came to light at 6:30 am today, when the mother of the victim and their relatives came to Chokpot thana to file a report.

According to the FIR, 4-5 militants, suspected to be GNLA cadres, came to the house of the victim and dragged her out after confining her husband and their children in their house.

Syiem said, The children of the victim, who were also eye witnesses to the crime, said two suspected GNLA militants initially tried to rape and molest their mother. But when she resisted their advances, the militants fired 5-6 rounds of bullets into her head. She died instantly.

Syiem added that the police had received an unconfirmed report from sources of the killing of the woman at about 7:30 pm yesterday. However, the police did not go to the spot to investigate the matter, fearing an ambush by GNLA militants.

DSP CM Sangma, along with a team, this morning went to Chokpot where the inquest was performed by the OC of the thana, FD Marak. The body was then sent to the Baghmara Civil Hospital for post mortem.

A handwritten letter was found wherein the GNLA has accused the deceased of being a police informer.

Search and combing operations are on to nab the militants in the area.
