GNLA leader escapes police dragnet

By Correspondent

TURA, Feb 21 Dreaded militant leader of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Sohan D Shira, escaped a police dragnet at Samanda village, 18 kms from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district around noon today.

A combing operation by CRPF deployed in East Garo Hills led to the discovery of a hideout of the GNLA on a hill- top across the river Simsang in which there were about 12 heavily armed militants who opened fire on seeing the security forces.

The militants opened a hail of continuous fire from AK rifles for over 15 minutes after which they escaped leaving behind some incriminating documents and their meal on the table of the house where they had taken shelter.

The army chief of GNLA Sohan D Shira was present in the house at the time of the encounter along with another militant leader identified as Jenny, area commander of Williamnagar. The house owner Starson Sangma also fled from the encounter scene and police retrieved close to two hundred empty cases of AK ammunition.

This is the fifth time the GNLA chief escaped security operations launched against his outfit. Last year, he was almost caught while paying a visit to his house in Chachatgre during Easter Sunday celebrations for a meal with his family. This year, he escaped with his wife and children along with a handful of hardcore members from a hideout that was busted by security forces on Republic Day.
