TURA, Oct 28 - Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) today claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of Chokpot BDO Jude Rangku T Sangma while he was on his way here from Chokpot yesterday.
The outfit said the abduction happened because the officer blamed politicians and the outfit for non-implementation of projects.
The GNLA, in a release, alleged, On May 23 when the Chief Minister visited Chokpot block and asked what happened to the Rs 40 crore sanctioned for black-topping of interior roads, the BDO said that all the money had been taken by GNLA. But till date we have not taken any money from the Block or the BDO.
Further, the outfit alleged that when questions had been raised about non-utilisation of funds under MGNREGS schemes, the blame was put on a Minister who diverted the money for the recent Chokpot by-election, with the seat being won by Congress.
The GNLA release stated that the officer was now in their custody in a camp where he would be questioned for his statements and allegations.
As many as 248 villages were part of the MGNREGS project and money amounting to Rs 20 crore for menial work undertaken for 50-60 work days should have been paid but the officer says that the entire amount was taken by a Minister for the by-election, added the GNLA release while also stating that questions relating to the amount of over Rs 1.15 crore under BRGF schemes were also unanswered.
Meanwhile, efforts to rescue the kidnapped official have been intensified by South Garo Hills district police. As it has been confirmed that the officer has been kidnapped by GNLAs Chokpot commander, Hedio, we have launched operations to secure the release of the official. We are hopeful of a breakthrough soon, said district SP Lakador Syiem.
