TURA, March 31 The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA)s East Garo Hills commander, Kiljang Sangma alias Jangjang, was killed when police personnel raided a makeshift camp of the outfit near Nengkhra village in East Garo Hills this morning.

The place of the encounter is about 14 kms from the district headquarters Williamnagar and about 94 kms from Tura town.

Based on information about the presence of GNLA militants near Nengkhra village, our team overran a makeshift camp of the GNLA in which its area commander was killed. We recovered an AK rifle that was on him from the spot, said East Garo Hills district police chief Davies Marak. There were about seven militants hiding in the camp at the time of encounter. But the area where the GNLA militants were hiding had dense vegetation and they were able to take advantage of the same and escape. Combing operation was launched immediately, Marak added.
