GMDA throws ball into GDD court

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 1 - A day after Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Additional Chief Secretary MGVK Bhanu expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of disposal of building permission by the Guwahati Municipal Development Authority (GMDA), its Chairman Dhiren Baruah today insisted that the building permit is actually issued by the GMC. The GMDA only issues the planning permit, he said in an official rejoinder.

According to an official release issued yesterday, Bhanu had expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of issue of building permission at a review meeting held here on August 30 last.

Welcoming the concern of the Additional Chief Secretary, Baruah claimed that the GMDA is always working with utmost sincerity with a citizen-centric approach.

At present three posts of development officers and one post of assistant town planner are lying vacant. Further, the important posts like the secretary and the town planner had also been lying vacant since March 2017 until recently. In view of the increasing volume of work and despite the shortage of manpower, GMDA is trying its level best to provide its services to the public. As soon as the vacant positions are filled, the GMDA will be able to satisfy the citizens of Guwahati, Baruah said in an official statement.

On Bhanus suggestion to conduct public hearing on building permission every month, the GMDA Chairman said that his office is always open to public grievances round-the-clock which he and all officers attend to personally.
