GMCH tense after babys death

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 3 Sensation prevailed at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) following the unnatural death of a newborn baby girl this afternoon.

Kiran Baruah, the grandmother of the victim initially alleged that the condition of the baby deteriorated after she was dumped on the bed by a security guard, but later she came up with an altogether different version stating that the baby had an accidental fall when the security guard was trying to take the baby from her lap.

The baby died few minutes after the incident reportedly took place at the GMCH.

The incident took place when the on-duty security guard asked the grandmother to leave the room as there was already one attendant present, eye-witnesses said.

The child was born on the night of June 1 following a caesarian and doctors said that the baby was born with complications. Deepali Rajbongshi, the mother of the baby was unconscious when the incident took place. The baby has been sent for post mortem.

As the news of the babys death spread, infuriated people manhandled with two other security guards, who were nowhere linked with the incident. The one involved in the incident fled from the scene, police said.

Ramen Talukdar, superintendent, GMCH, informed that the family of the newborn baby and the eye-witnesses had so far come up with two versions on the matter.

The grandmother of the child initially alleged that the security person threw the baby on the floor but later she contradicted herself with a different version. As a complaint has been lodged with the police, the truth of the matter would come to the fore only after the investigation, Talukdar said.
