GUWAHATI, Sept 15 - The cause that led to the death of 25-year-old Ningchingpeung Panme, an MBBS final year student of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), is still a mystery for both the police and the college authorities.
Panme, who hailed from Dima Hasao district, was a boarder of GMCH Hostel-4. On Monday, his half-naked body was found lying in the backyard of the hostel campus. The body had serious injury marks and police said that he apparently fell from the fourth floor of the hostel on Sunday night.
Principal cum Chief Superintendent of GMCH, Prof (Dr) Achyut Chandra Baishya, stated that Panme had taken admission in the MBBS course in 2014 but due to some reasons he could not complete the course in time. So he might have been a victim of depression, he said.
�He was an irregular student and as per my knowledge he was in an intoxicated mood on Sunday night. The police have already started investigation. Today, his post-mortem surgery was held and forensic investigation is also under way,� Dr Baishya said. GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma also stated that he believes the incident was either a suicide or an accident.
Omar Faruk, Sub-Inspector of the Bhangagarh Police Station, who is the investigation officer in the case, revealed that as per the findings of a preliminary investigation, it is clear that the student fell from a great height and he might have committed suicide.
�As it is a single-sitter hostel, no one was aware when the incident took place. One of his friends has said that Panme, after having dinner on Sunday night, went to his room and no one saw him from then on. Later, on Monday some labourers working in the hostel building discovered the body,� Faruk said.
A case of unnatural death has been registered with the Bhangagarh Police Station in this connection. Today, police handed over the body to his family after the post-mortem.
