GUWAHATI, Nov 20 - Irate public set ablaze a GMC water tanker at Bhangagarh here this morning after it knocked dead a man and injured four others. The agitated people also clashed with the police who had to resort to a lathicharge.

The deceased identified as Bidyut Chomuwa, a resident of Rukminigaon, was riding on a two-wheeler. Among the four injured admitted to the GMCH, two have been discharged.

Nayan Kumar, the water tanker driver, has been arrested. The vehicle was coming from the Paltan Bazar side.

A few eye witnesses alleged that the vehicle was being driven at a great speed. However, the driver claimed that the two-wheeler rider had overtaken his vehicle from the wrong side.

A police constable on duty was also manhandled by the mob. As the public blocked the road and set the water tanker on fire, there was a severe traffic snarl on the busy GS Road. The police later resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the protesters.
