GUWAHATI, March 28 � The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has failed to provide any information on whether any silt trap or silt pit exists anywhere in the city. It has just been able to furnish a list of 20 silt traps/pits which are proposed to be installed at various places of the city in the days to come.
In response to queries made by RTI-cum-environment activist Rohit Choudhury, the civic body has not said anything about the existence of such structures, which play a very important role in checking rain-induced flash floods in the city.
However, it provided the RTI activist with a list of 20 silt traps/silt pits proposed to be set up at various places of the city.
The places where the silt pits are proposed to be set up include: DG Road near Maligaon Chariali, under GMC Ward No. 3; Nambari near the Saint Mary�s School under Ward No. 1; Nabagraha Road near the Nabagraha Cremation Ground under Ward No. 12; Nabagraha Road near War Cemetery under the same municipal ward; Milanpur Road near the Assam Engineering Institute Hospital; Pensionpara Road; Karnachal Road near Durga Mandir; Red Cross Hospital Road under GMC Ward No. 12; Krishna Nagar near the Krishna Nagar LP School; Amar Path near Krishna Nagar High School; Livestock Poultry Office under Ward No. 31; GS Road by the side of the Veterinary College complex under Ward No. 31 and at the Green Wood Resort approach culvert also under Ward No. 31.
It further said that one silt trap each at Kali Mandir Path and at Hanuram Boro Path of Christianbasti area, at Ganeshguri GMC Market Road and at Rajgarh Box Drain at the junction of Apurba Sinha Path have also been proposed.
It has also proposed construction of silt chambers at Green Wood Resort Bye-lane, Nabajyoti Nagar and at Lichubagan near the cremation ground.
