GUWAHATI, Sept 13 The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will soon send a proposal to the State Government to extend its area and include new localities within the civic body.

The Mayor and councilors of the GMC have approved a proposal in this regard and it will now be sent to the State Government.

If approved by the Government, the area under the GMC will go up from the existing 216 square km to 328 square km. The new areas sought to be included in the GMC are Dharapur, Kahikuchi, Azara, Amingaon, North Guwahati, Birkuchi, Bonda, Panikhaiti, Borjhar Airport, Pamohi and SOS Village.

GMC officials said that Central funding to the civic body will go up in case the proposal is accepted and the new areas come within the limits of the civic body.

Already, work on a number of schemes, including water supply projects are being carried out in these localities. The inclusion of the new localities will facilitate other civic activities like garbage collection and disposal and related matters.
