GMC orders closure of hookah bars in city

GUWAHATI, Dec 20 - All the outlets running hookah bars under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have been ordered to close down with immediate effect.

Issuing a notice on Friday, the GMC stated that it will not renew or issue trade licence for hookah bars within the city.

�In pursuance of the notification of closure of hookah bars issued by the GDD on October 19, no further renewal or issuance of trade licence for hookah bar will be entertained by GMC for which the said activities are to be closed within a period of seven days from the date of issuance of the notice,� the notice read.

Moreover, the Commissioner of Excise yesterday directed the Superintendents of Excise of several districts of the State to take measures on hotels which serves liquor without having a valid excise licence.

It has asked the Superintendents of Kamrup (M), Hailakandi, Udalguri, Darrang, Nalbari, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Goalpara, Barpeta, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Dhubri, Nagaon, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Cachar, Karimganj, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Sonitpur, Baksa and Chirang to carry out drives to keep a vigil on such hotels on the eve of Christmas and New Year.
