By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 23 - A thematic cleanliness drive by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is under way at the public toilet situated at Fancy Bazar as part of the Swachhata Pakhwada fortnight from November 16 to 30.

The Swachhata Pakhwada is aimed at creating public awareness and bringing about a behavioural change regarding the advantages of an open defecation-free city. The Swachhata Pakhwada is mainly concentrated in encouraging people not having access to individual toilets to use community and public toilets. As part of Phase-I of the Swachhata Pakhwada fortnight, GMC has targeted the communities in enlightening them on the hazardous practice of open defecation, a GMC official said.

The cleanliness drive was inaugurated by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania in the presence of Sanjib Gohain Boruah, Commissioner, and other senior officials. Sarania also gave an insight to the community in the surrounding areas on the use of proper sanitation facilities.

The general public joined hands with the municipal officials for the vision of Swachh Guwahati. As a continuation of Phase-I, the premises of the Bhangagarh public toilet and areas surrounding it have been taken for an intensive cleanliness drive, the official said.
