DOOMDOOMA, Oct 6 � Amidst the Durga Puja festivities, a tragic incident that took place at Hansara near here on October 2 night marred the puja fervour.
According to information, two girls boarded a Tata Magic (No-AS23G-2531) at Doomdooma town towards Hansara at around 9-20 pm. But it is alleged that instead of dropping them at Hansara, the driver tried to take them towards Tinsukia and both the driver and the handyman also tried to molest the two girls. There was no other passenger in the vehicle. In order to protect herself from molestation one of the two girls, Sangita Praja (22) jumped from the running vehicle and was run over by it. After the incident the driver of the Magic Partha Burhagohain fled from the scene leaving the vehicle there. The locals gathered at the spot and rescued the other girl and caught Arup Maut (20), the handyman of the vehicle who was later handed over to the police. The irate public also set ablaze the vehicle. The public also stopped the plying of Magics carrying passengers along the NH-37.
