Girl in distress denied help, police role questioned

By Correspondent

JORABAT, April 16 - The role of the police after an eighteen-year-old girl from Uttarakhand who had been working as a maid-cum-baby sitter at the official quarters of CRPF Inspector Nitu Rawat at the 9th Mile-based CRPF Group Centre for the last one year, was found crying on the street here this morning, has been questioned in conscious circles here.

A few conscious citizens of the locality brought the matter to the notice of Jorabat Police Outpost, following which the girl named Mamta, who was trembling in fear, was interrogated by a team of police personnel.

Mamta revealed that she had been staying with Nitu Rawat from her previous posting elsewhere since she was 15.

Presently, Nitu Rawat is on election duty in Srinagar. Taking advantage of her absence, Mamta fled from the quarters in a bid to go back to her home in Uttarakhand. She was seen carrying a mobile handset, on which multiple phone calls from Nitu and her friend were received.

After tracing her location, Nitus friend, who is also a CRPF officer, reached Jorabat to take away Mamta, to which the latter refused. But despite Mamtas reluctance to go with the CRPF officer, Jorabat police handed her over to the officer. The police did not even bother to take Mamta to the police outpost. The role of the police vis-a-vis the girl in distress has raised questions among the local people.
