Gaurav Gogoi adopts Kushal Konwars village

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Nov 21 First time Congress MP and Chief Minister Tarun Gogois son Gaurav Gogoi has selected martyr Kushal Konwars native place, Gondhokoroi in Golaghat district, to turn it into a model village.

Gogoi wants to make Gondhokoroi 100 per cent organic and his plan includes involving schoolchildren of the village in growing organic vegetables on their school playground.

Gogoi announced on Wednesday that he would invite international NGOs to provide organic certification to the growers. Self-help groups (SHGs) will be formed to produce village-level vermin-composting units, he added.

Young farmers will be identified and sent to Thailand to study modern cultivation, Gogoi said.

My dream is to have several organic model villages across the State. This is my way of paying tribute to the sacrifice of Swahid Kushal Konwar, the first-time MP said about his plans on adopting the village.

Kushal Konwar was a freedom fighter from Assam who was hanged during the last phase of the Quit India Movement of 1942-43 for his suspected role in the derailment of a military train in which several British and American soldiers were killed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on October 11, asking MPs to coordinate the convergence of existing rural development schemes in the village by using funds under the existing schemes and their MP Local Area Development Fund.

MPs have been asked to focus on and develop one village from their constituency as a model village by 2016, and two more by 2019, covering over 2,500 villages of six lakh villages country-wide. PTI
